Books of the Week

Oscar's Lion‘Oscar’s Lion’ by Adam Baron & Benji Davies

Shortlisted for the 2025 Spark! School Book Awards (7+ Category)

One Friday morning Oscar wakes to find that his parents have gone and a large lion is occupying their room. Though he is worried about their disturbing disappearance, he is soon distracted by the lion who obligingly reads him his favourite book over and over again with much more patience than his parents ever do. The lion scares off Oscar’s bully on the way to school and then causes a distraction so he won’t get into trouble for forgetting his homework project. On Saturday, the adventures of Oscar and the lion become even more magical and fantastic. At the end of the weekend, the mystery of the talking, shape-shifting lion is revealed.

This is an absolutely enchanting story, full of heart and humour, that combines an incredible adventure with an emotional journey. Highly recommended!

Call the Puffins‘Call the Puffins: Tiny and the Cave Ghost’ by Cath Howe

In Book 4 the rescued egg from Book 1 makes a reappearance in the form of Flotsam the Chick - an adorable fluffy baby, who is desperate to hang around her rescuers, Tiny and Muffin, but can’t help getting into trouble. In this case, she disappears into the terrifying caves, haunted by the mythical ‘Wandering Puffin’ - the last creature who went missing there. Muffin, Tiny and their friends launch a rescue mission, but when the darkness threatens to overcome them they remember that puffins are stronger together - and then something magical happens!

Cath Howe’s ‘Call the Puffins’ series combines a charming animal story with fascinating facts about puffins and is a perfect chapter book series for children who have moved on from picture books but need shorter chapter book series to build up their reading confidence. (And it is equally popular with some of the older pupils as well!) Another delightful puffin rescue adventure!
