Reminders

Secondary Schools
If your child is in Year 6 and intends to take up a place at an independent school for Year 7, please let the school office know. At the start of next term we will begin the transition process so it is important that we know your child's destination.

Year Group Weekly News
Don't forget to check your child's Google Classroom for an end of term update from your class teachers.

Home Learning
Next half-term's Home Learning activities for Years 1 to 6 are being posted on the Google Classroom. Work should be completed in time for the class Home Learning Showcases in school on Friday 23rd May.

School Office

The school office closed today and will reopen on Tuesday 22nd April at 8:00 am. Over the Easter break, emails to the office will be monitored remotely and urgent queries responded to as necessary.

School Lunches

Lunches for the first half of the summer term are now available to order through ParentPay. Click here to view the new term's full menu. Please remember to order for the first day back after the break, Tuesday 22nd April. You can order up to 8:00 am on the day. Next term, there will be three themed days: A Feast at Hogwarts on Thursday 1st May; Super Hero Day on Thursday 19th June; and At the Movies on Thursday 10th July. If your child brings a packed lunch, please ensure it is healthy and strictly nut-free. Children should not bring sweets or chocolate as a snack.

EasterToday we rounded off the spring term with our traditional Easter Bonner Parade. A huge well done to all the children - and staff - for some incredible bonnets! Two children from each class, and three members of staff, were awarded the best bonnets - look out for photos and video clips on your year group Google Classrooms. Mr Scott also announced the Team Points House winner (see below) and handed out his Headteacher's Award certificates in the whole school assembly.

This is the last school newsletter of the spring term. We hope that you have a well-deserved break and the children return rested and ready for the exciting summer term we have planned! Don't forget that Monday 21st April is a bank holiday - school opens again on Tuesday 22nd April and we look forward to seeing the children at the usual time.

Spark!Spark! School Book Awards

The Spark! Book Awards are well underway and some of our pupils have had the opportunity to enjoy an online author visit with the shortlisted authors Kieran Larwood (Dungeon Runners) and Rachel Chivers Khoo (The Magician Next Door). There will be further Spark! opportunities in the summer term, but in the meantime there is plenty of Spark! author content available on the Spark! YouTube channel. We hope your children are enjoying the books!

AI at Kingston Educational Trust

As part of Kingston Educational Trust’s ongoing commitment to educate pupils about technology and prepare them to be ‘future-ready’ at the end of their school journey, we have started to explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in some parts of the Trusts’ schools. At Fern Hill, children in Key Stage 2 have been, or will be, learning about the basics of how AI machine learning works, to begin to develop their understanding of its advantages and disadvantages in the context of e-safety. They have also been exploring the idea of prompt-engineering to enhance creative writing skills. You can read more about KET’s digital strategy and the use of AI in an educational context here. We would be most grateful for any feedback, suggestions or expertise you are able to share with us via this Google form

Safety on the school site

To ensure everyone's safety on the school site, we have restricted access to the car park area that runs between Fern Hill and The Kingston Academy. Access to the school main reception and playground gates is through the Richmond Road pedestrian gate only. Please dismount bikes and scooters before entering through the gate. May we also remind you to park considerately on nearby roads at drop off and pick up - to observe any parking restrictions in place and not block our neighbours' driveways. Children should not be dropped off by car outside the school on Richmond Road and allowed to walk in unaccompanied. Thank you for your support.

ImageBookings for next term's lunchtime and after school clubs is now open. Books of the Week

Farah Mango‘Farah Loves Mangos’ by Sarthak Sinha

Shortlisted for the 2025 Spark! School Book Awards (Early Reader Category)

Farah loves Mangos and she could eat them all day long. She also reads stories to them and would like to live in a mango. But one day Grandpa’s mango tree stops growing mangos. Farah is very upset about this and tries everything to get the tree to produce fruit - she sings to it, feeds it milk, wraps it in a scarf and waters it with her tears - but nothing helps. The tree is completely useless! But then Grandpa makes her a swing, and Farah gets a new perspective.

‘Farah Loves Mangos’ is a charming picture book, full of vivid illustrations, about appreciating the true beauty and intrinsic value of nature, and not treating it like a commodity.

Safiyyahs War'Safiyyah's War' by Hiba Noor Khan

Our Thursday Book Club has just finished reading this historical fiction book and the Year 6s have been discussing it each week with some Year 9 student helpers from TKA.

'This book is about an 11-year-old girl named Safiyyah who lives in Paris during World War II. She helps save Jewish people from the Nazis with the help of the Grand Mosque of Paris. It's a story about bravery and kindness! This book is inspiring, exciting, and teaches about real history.'
